Making our community a safe and drug-free environment . . . |

The After School & Mentoring Committee is directed by Carla Asbill and focuses on drug prevention by sponsoring activities that mentor children and youth.
This committee works hand-in-hand with Communities in School (CIS). CIS was given a five-year grant which provides an after-school mentoring program at the middle school level. The CIS program keeps children from roaming the streets unsupervised and gives them opportunities for growth through academic enrichment and activities. PALS (Positive Adults Lending Support) is another CIS mentoring program where a caring adult spends 45 minutes with a child each week, normally during lunch hour.
Asbill’s committee is responsible for the creation of YADA (Youth Against Drugs and Alcohol), Winnsboro High School’s student-led club promoting drug and alcohol prevention. This new organization attracted about 25% of the student body to join in its first year. YADA members sign a statement saying that they will not use drugs or alcohol; they also participate in two community service projects each year. Future plans are to have YADA students serve as mentors at the elementary and middle schools.
If you would like to participate on the committee or if you have additional comments, please e-mail Chairman Carla Asbill at casbill@ntcc.edu.
